The University of New South Wales has been a big supporter of Big Bento Lunch since its inception.
The university again took part in 2015 and sent us this lovely letter:
My name is Raymond Wang and I helped organise the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Big Bento Lunch in close cooperation with Professor Chihiro Thomson and Ms Nagisa Fukui and the Japanese faculty of UNSW. I am writing to give report on the UNSW Big Bento Lunch.
The UNSW Big Bento Lunch that was held on-campus on Wednesday 18 March 2015 and was a big success.
Following precedence set by the previous years’ UNSW Big Bento Lunch events, 130 bento boxes were ordered from Daruma Japanese Restaurant. To provide variety and choice this year, 3 different types of bento boxes were available for the event: $15 Chicken Teriyaki Bento, $15 Fish Katsu Bento, and a $10 Chicken Katsu Bento. Proceeds to charity comprised of $5 from the $15 bento and $3.5 from the $10 bento, with the rest going towards covering the costs of the bento.
The event began at 10:45am and was scheduled to end at 2:30pm. Staff from the Japanese faculty as well as volunteers from Nippon Students’s Association (NSA), the Japanese society of UNSW, worked together to man the stalls and helped inform the public about the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, processed bento sales, and collected donations. Informative A3 posters were also placed around the stalls with A5-sized flyers detailing the work of the Playground of Hope charity being handed out to those who passed by.
Peak human traffic, and hence exposure, occurs at the 12pm and 1pm hour mark, however, by 12:10pm we were able to achieve a complete sale with all 130 bento boxes being sold out. The bento boxes yielded $590 in charity with donations amounting to $103.40; totalling $693.40 in proceeds to charity from the UNSW Big Bento Lunch.
The UNSW Big Bento Lunch and its success was made possible through the close cooperation and tremendous efforts of both the Japanese faculty of UNSW and the members of NSA.
It has been, and always will be, a pleasure for the Japanese faculty of UNSW and members of NSA to host the UNSW Big Bento Lunch.
